Who Is The Head Elf?

Santa's Magical Elves

There is a lot of confusion about the Head Elf at the North Pole. Much of the confusion is due to the characters in many Christmas movies and books.

You may be familiar with Bernard from The Santa Clause movies who is the Head Elf in Santa’s workshop. Bernard is in charge of the North Pole operations and keeps things running smoothly. He’s known for his no-nonsense attitude and dedication to making sure Christmas goes off without a hitch.

In The Santa Clause and The Santa Clause 2, Bernard is in charge. However, by The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause, Bernard is noticeably absent and Curtis seems to have taken over as the Head Elf. In the later Disney+ series The Santa Clauses, a whole new generation of elves is introduced.

So, it’s time for Santa to set the record straight about the Head Elf. Actually, the Head Elf position isn’t permanent – elves may be promoted, retire, or step down over time. What really happens is that there is the Great Elf Election. Every fifty years, the elves at the North Pole participate in this election – a time honored tradition that ensures leadership stays fresh and effective. Here’s how it works:

  1. Nomination Phase – Any elf who has worked in Santa’s workshop for at least 100 years (which is a solid career for an elf) can be nominated. Nominations can come from fellow elves or even from Santa himself.
  2.  Campaign Season – Once the candidates are announced, they spend several months presenting their ideas on how to improve efficiency in toy-making, sleigh maintenance, and holiday cheer. They give speeches and attend festive town halls. They even participate in The Peppermint Debate where they discuss crucial elf policies like cookie break lengths, reindeer flight training schedules and increasing the Christmas Spirit worldwide.
  3. The Voting Process – On election day, all elves cast their votes by dropping enchanted candy canes into a magical urn in the Great Hall of the North Pole. The urn counts the votes automatically and the results are revealed at the Grand Elf Ceremony.
  4. The Grand Elf Ceremony –  Santa announces the new Head Elf at this special ceremony. The chosen elf receives the Golden Peppermint Staff, a symbol of leadership. The new Head Elf takes the Oath of the Jingle Bell promising to serve with dedication.

The Head Elf oversees all North Pole operations working closely with Santa to ensure that Christmas runs smoothly. They serve for fifty years after which a new election is held. An elf can run for re-election but sometimes they choose to step down and mentor the next generation instead. Some elves, like Bernard, have been so good at their jobs that they’ve been re-elected multiple times.

So, there have been many who have served as Head Elf through the years – Bernard, Curtis, Sparklebell, Alabaster, Juniper, Sugarplum Mary and others. We honor all of them at the North Pole for their dedication and hard work ensuring that the North Pole continues to be such a magical place.
